We are looking for two singers to join the ensemble for this a cappella performance piece for a tour this Spring/Summer.
Verity Standen is an award-winning composer, director and performer based in Bristol. Her performance pieces have been presented in theatres and concert venues, galleries and museums, dance festivals and live art programmes, castles and cafes. Wherever it is performed, enchanting and playful music is always at the heart of Verity’s work; she creates sound worlds, often using intricate vocal techniques and rich harmony, and allows each audience member to interpret mood and narrative for themselves.
Previous projects include HUG, in which each audience member is blindfolded and embraced by a singers; Mmm Hmmm, a trio a cappella theatre piece; and Symphony, a performance for individual audience members.
Undersong places the audience at the heart of a musical experience. Singers move around and amongst the crowd – encircling them in song, sitting amongst them, sharing moments with individual people, weaving through them, lying on the floor beneath them – while performing Verity’s original music. The music ranges from tender, intimate solo improvisation to rich, guttural harmony. There is a trailer on Verity’s website that gives a good sense of the piece. The show premiered at Mayfest in Bristol and Ovalhouse in London in 2018.
‘One of the most extraordinary pieces of performance I’ve ever seen.’ – Exeunt
‘A visceral and life-affirming experience’ – Bristol 24/7
‘Undersong is truly transformative’ – Miro Magazine
We are looking to meet singers from a range of different backgrounds, who might bring different experiences, sounds and energies to the group. Verity is re-arranging much of the show, so the rehearsal process will be open to exploration (rather than simply remounting the show as it was).
We are casting two singers to join the group (giving a total ensemble of 8).
Verity does not use score – she writes and teaches everything by ear.
You don’t need any particular training, but you should be confident picking up and holding complex harmonies, and willing to improvise.
The performance involves choreography, so if you have experience of dance please let us know – but this is by no means essential, and Verity works with movement artists to adapt everything to the bodies in the room.
9 – 20 Mar: Rehearsal, Bristol 24 – 28 Mar: Performances, Bristol
20 Apr – 1 May: Performances, London
6 May – 4 June: Performances, touring (not full-time, some gaps)
£500 per week (approx. 9 weeks total), plus per diems, travel and accommodation.
Wed 12 Feb in Bristol (we can contribute to travel costs for performers coming from elsewhere)
Please email producer Tom Spencer at firstname.lastname@example.org with either a few lines or a short video about any relevant experience you have, plus up to two audio/video links to you singing (needn’t be anything fancy, just to hear your voice). Any questions, please ask.
